| "Balto, the dog that saved Nome, Alaska"

Cast: 3 to 17+ actors. In February 1925, stricken by a diphtheria epidemic, the mining town of Nome, Alaska, was saved by 20 dog teams that delivered 300,000 units of serum over 674 miles of treacherous terrain. Balto, the lead sled dog, led the last 53 miles of the dangerous journey and became a media sensation. He was so famous that he toured the U.S. and throughout Europe and even starred in a Hollywood movie. But, like most media sensations, the public lost interest in him, and a few years later Balto ended up in a run-down sideshow in California. Barely surviving the mistreatment of the greedy carnival owner, he was saved from disease and starvation by a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman who heard where the famous sled dog ended up. Balto's owner was willing to sell the dog, but he wanted more money than the businessman could afford. So the businessman returned to Cleveland and started to raise money by asking schoolchildren to give him their pennies to help buy Balto. The children raised enough money to rescue Balto so that he could live out his life in luxury at the Cleveland Zoo. This musical features a wonderful eclectic score that includes the tuneful "That's the Dog!," the blues number, "Why Not Me?" the pulsating "Keep Running," the plaintive "This Is My Story" and the toe-tapping "Ev'ry Little Penny." First produced at the Cleveland Play House to sold-out houses, Balto is an inspirational, true, heartwarming story of adventure, courage and compassion. Unit set.
